Group: Discipleship Leadership Challenge

New Life Church in Augusta, Georgia made a commitment earlier this year to focus on discipleship. Starting with the men, their desire was to build a core set of discipleship groups using DiscipleLink to grow closer to Christ. Leveraging the staff and church leadership, Pastor Phillip Maxwell launched a 5-Week Discipleship Challenge Group and invited eighteen men to participate.

This initial group of leaders was designed to accelerate and prepare members for ongoing discipleship groups of four or five men to meet throughout 2023 and beyond. During the 5-week challenge, members followed a Bible Reading Plan, Journal Assignments, and Weekly Meetings to share highs and lows, as well as pray and encourage each other. In addition to signing a covenant (see sample), group members committed to leading or participating in future groups with other men at New Life. Pastor Phillip was able to use the accountability tools within DiscipleLink to gauge participation and ensure the church staff and leaders were up to the challenge.

5-Week Discipleship Challenge Covenant Agreement

“I was able to use DiscipleLink to check the spiritual maturity levels of the leaders at our church. Some of the more seasoned members of our team were not as committed as I thought, while many of the younger staff stepped up to the challenge and showed a real ability to lead, study and share their faith.”

After successfully administering the leadership challenge, New Life shared the plan with all of the men of the church during Sunday services using a series of messages, on-screen QR codes, and a quick Google form to allow the men of the church to sign up for the ongoing discipleship groups. Over 50 men responded the first Sunday and New Life will be launching their ongoing discipleship groups in January, with plans to expand to the women of the church in February.

Within one year, hundreds of members at New Life Church will be engaged in becoming and making disciples!
